Piroplasmosis Test UPDATE
The state of Michigan has updated requirements for the Piroplasmosis Test to make it good for 1 year rather than 30 days. Horses will be required to show proof of the test within the last year.
Piroplasmosis Test Required in Michigan
All horses traveling to a UPQHA show from a state with a diagnosed case of Piroplasmosis will be required to show Coggin's test as well as health papers that show Piroplasmosis test results. This test is only good for 30 days, as are health papers. Vets are saying that the test is estimated at a turnaround time of 2 weeks, so please plan accordingly. Here's the statement from the Michigan State Vet Lab:
Piroplasmosis test results may be written on the health certificate in a location reserved for testing results, or if none is available, may be written in the body of the health certificate and should include the date the blood was drawn, the date the results were read, the laboratory used, and the results.
This new rule stems from the fact that an infected horse was imported into Wisconsin from Texas. The horse was sent back to the Texas ranch where it originated. The other three horses on the farm previously tested negative, and will be retested shortly. There are currently no known cases of this disease in Wisconsin. If you would like to help get this ban removed, please contact the Michigan Department of Agriculture. Please feel free to share your concerns that this test might prohibit exhibitors from Wisconsin traveling to horse shows in Michigan, which would impact local economies that are supported by these exhibitors. Hopefully we can get this requirement removed for show horses!
